Spirit Temple
The Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time’s Spirit Temple is the last and final main temple in the game, but don’t cry; there’s still far more to be played, and you can still enjoy great cut scenes just a bit further into the end of it all. So it’s not quite over. But you’re getting close…..
The Spirit Temple is the Nintendo video game’s 8th dungeon and the one just before the final wrap - up at Ganon’s Castle, where you fight Ganon to his demise...or yours. Who will come out on top? Who will win, in the end? It’s up to you, but if you want to see success, you must now make it through the Spirit Temple….one victory comes after another, of course.
The Haunted Wasteland of Hyrule, holding the Desert Colossus, is where this sacred temple can be found...and the journey there will not even be as tough as the time spent inside the temple. That I can promise you. But it will be well worth it, all in all. Yet it all starts with having our horse, Epona, to help you get there…..
Epona, whom you encounter and befriend far earlier in the game, will come to your side when it comes to crossing a broken bridge by making a strong ‘leap of faith’ jump that’ll get you to the other side of Gerudo Valley...where you then have to get through Gerudo’s Fortress, sneaking past several guards and even fighting a few Gerudos. Then, once you can make it through the desert, and locate the temple, a true challenge waits for you...and Link (as the character whose life you play as) is counting on you to make it to the end, eventually collecting that last medallion you need to save your land.
Nabooru was the main sage of this temple, at least before Ganondorf took over things and rose as a greater threat than she could possibly imagine. Ganondorf also managed to place one of his strongest curses inside this temple, which will take a lot more courage and wit, than ever before, to break. But if anyone can do it, by now, we know it’s you, player (playing as the heroic Link, of course).
Notably, the creatures known as Anubis are only seen in this dungeon of the Ocarina of Time game and may not be found in any other; so if you rejoice in nothing else, rejoice in that --- you, as Link, only have to face them one time, and that’s here in this temple.
These mummified creatures represent quite a jackal - like nature, overall, and are known for mimicking Link’s every move, kind of like Dark Link / Shadow Link did, but not to the same effect. When Link moves, these foes move; also, when he chooses to attack, they’ll do the same. Keep in mind this, too : Whenever Link moves forward or backward in any type of direction, these Anubis foes will do the same….but in the opposite direction, each time. It’s kind of annoying to watch and play through, to be honest, but don’t let that stop you from carrying out the rest of your quest; you’re so far in the game already --- you can do it. Finish.
Whenever Link attacks one of these with his sword, it’ll blast fire out at him. So put that sword away. In this case, fire has to beat fire, so to speak; you could only beat these guys using fire by tricking the Anubis into following you and then landing itself into one of the Fire Traps found in the dungeon. It won’t always be easy, but it is, by far, definitely a can - do achievement. You just have to keep trying, and coordinating your efforts “just right”, until you get the hang of it and can pull it off.
You can also use your inventory. This is easier, according to a lot of gamers. What I mean is that Din’s Fire, or any Fire Arrow you shoot out, can also do the trick….it can’t get easier. It seems there’s many ways to use fire to get the job done, so pick whichever one sounds more appealing, or “do - able”, to you.
Anubis, in realistic historical references, was known as Egypt’s ‘embalming god’. The name for the creature in this game may have been taken from the same traditional name. Who knows where it came from? But it’s a fun fact to note the origin of the name…..
This is also, quite interestingly, a temple in which Link gets to explore in both versions of himself throughout the video game.
Yes, both child Link and adult Link get to go there. They each do different tasks while there, of course. Ooh, and did I mention the White Bubbles you find in this temple?
This is the only temple featuring them, the only place in the game where they truly exist, I suppose. And what are they? Great question. White Bubbles are creatures that can fly, spin in place, and fly quickly in all kinds of directions….they’re exactly like the Green Bubbles, for instance, that you meet in the Forest Temple. But they’re white instead. They’re no less deadly, though, so don’t make them angry.
In this final main dungeon, you get the Silver Gauntlets, which can let you move heavy objects. Koume and Kotake, two evil twin witches who have reportedly abducted Nabooru and were surrogate mothers to evil Ganondorf himself, are whom you will face at the very end of this temple, so be prepared. They will challenge you in every way imaginable, working together in unison to outnumber you as well. Now you know.
Once you finally get to them, you must use sword and shield to deflect and attack. Use your arrows, too. Light arrows work really well as do Fire and Ice Arrows. Finally defeat them in this two - on - one battle, and your quest will almost be over…..then it’ll be Ganondorf time!
