The TurboGraphx-16, also called the PC Engine in Japan, was an interesting console that was first released in Japan in 1987. It was released in North America in 1989. It was designed with the intention of competing with the 8-bit NES. It instead ended up competing with the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. This was not a fair fight. The TG-16 had an 8-bit CPU but a 16-bit graphics processor ( hence the name ).

When I was a kid, my cousins had one of these. It was decent but not as amazing as the Super Nintendo. They only had like three games with Keith Courage being one of them. Keith Courage was an excellent game and totally worth playing. So much of that game just takes me back to the late 80s.

The Japanese version of the console is much smaller.

The controller was relatively simple but a little strange at the same time. The two main buttons were labeled “I” and “II”. It featured two little switches that I never used. I think they were to enable autofire or something.
