Sega Genesis
I’ve spent a pretty fair amount of time playing Sega Genesis as a kid. I didn’t own they system myself but my cousins did. I mostly played at their house. Much later on I bought one on EBay because I always wanted one and had to have it.
The system was apparently more popular in the US than in Japan. It was geared more towards fast action games. Sonic the Hedgehog was the flagship game and for good reason. Basically Sonic is to Sega what Mario is to Nintendo.
The design of the case and the controllers was more sleek. There were fewer buttons on the Genesis controller as compared to the Super Nintendo controller. The Genesis had A/B/C buttons instead of A/B/X/Y buttons. It had a start button but no select button. IT completely lacked the L/R buttons. The buttons were bigger and easier to “mash” or hit quickly. They were also arranged to make this a bit easier too. Later Sega consoles added more buttons resulting in Z/B/C/X/Y/Z which was a neat trend.
In my mind, these games stood out the most but there were a ton more that were worth being aware of:
- Sonic 1/2 ( mostly sonic 2 )
- Mortal Kombat
- Toejam and Earl 2: Panic on Funcatron
