Bulbasaur

Bulbasaur is the very first Pokemon to be listed in the Pokedex. It is listed as number one. It is a grass / poison type Pokemon. Bulbasaur was first introduced in the very first game and is a generation one Pokemon. In the first game, this is one of your three choices for a starter Pokemon. Bulbasaur is a great choice and comes with some really excellent abilities. The one downside, in the early games (red, blue, and let's go) is that he doesn't hold up as well against bug type Pokemon. A charmander would be an easier choice. Pretty early on you will find yourself exploring Viridian forest which is filled with bug type Pokemon. Bulbasaur won't give you as much of an advantage against them as Charmander would.

Similar to the other starter Pokemon, bulbasaur is pretty cute looking. He almost looks like a little dinosaur with a plant bulb growing on its back. His width almost gives him a toad like look but he is still clearly some type of lizard. The word saur in its name actually means lizard. So the name means "bulb lizard". As you can see bulbasaur is a really cool looking Pokemon. You get all of the coolness of a dinosaur like Pokemon that runs around and looks cool combined with the neat features of a plant type Pokemon. This is a two in one, hybrid deal that makes for a seriously awesome pet. As cute as he is, he is also to be taken seriously. He will hold is own in almost any battle, especially if you make good use of the leech seed move.

Moves

Bulbasaur starts out with both growl and tackle. I usually replace these moves about as soon as I start needing more slots for moves. Growl and tackle are pretty boring, generic moves and are of type normal. I would generally tend to want to focus on grass or poison type moves.

The first interesting move that bulbasaur can learn is vine whip at level five. This is an excellent grass type move and I generally keep this one..

Leech seed is probably my favorite move for grass type Pokemon. It doesn't give you a huge immediate benefit but pays out really well over the course of a longer battle. If you know a fight is going to be easy, don't bother but if you know you are in for a tough time, you should use this move right at the beginning. It leaches your enemies life away a little bit at a time. This stays in effect for the duration of the battle so you can continue fighting with other moves during the next turn. It harms your opponent while at the same time healing your Bulbasaur. This can often be enough to keep your health significantly higher so you don't have to waste a move using an item.
